Is this grit bin right for your site?
When should your site be winter-ready?
Enter your postcode to see when your area typically experiences its first autumn frost and when we recommend having winter equipment in place.
Allow time to position grit bins, receive salt and confirm who will treat priority areas when freezing conditions are forecast.
Based on Met Office HadUK-Grid 5km daily minimum air-temperature observations across 30 seasons beginning 1991–2020. The window covers the middle 60% of recorded first air-frost dates. This is a planning guide, not a forecast; local surface and road temperatures can differ.

FAQs
What is the difference between a grit bin and a salt bin?
The terms are generally interchangeable. Both describe a weather-resistant outdoor container used to store rock salt or winter grit close to areas that may require treatment.
How much salt does a 200L grit bin hold?
The bin provides 200 litres of internal storage capacity. The equivalent weight varies according to the type of salt, its moisture content and how densely it is packed, so capacity is best compared by volume rather than an exact kilogram figure.
Does the grit bin include salt or a shovel?
No. This product is supplied as an empty grit bin unless the product description or quotation specifically states otherwise. This allows you to choose the quantity and type of rock salt and any spreading equipment required for your site.
Is the grit bin lockable?
Yes. Every bin is supplied with a fitted hasp and staple so the lid can be secured. The padlock itself is not included, allowing you to use a lock that suits your existing key or security arrangements.
Can the grit bin be fixed to the ground?
Yes. Four corner fixing holes in the base allow the bin to be bolted or anchored in position. The correct fixings will depend on the surface beneath the bin and should be selected and installed appropriately.
Where should a grit bin be positioned?
Place it close to priority treatment areas such as pedestrian entrances, external steps, ramps, loading bays, car parks and routes where water commonly collects. It should remain safely accessible during poor weather without obstructing walkways, doors, vehicles or emergency routes.
How many grit bins does a workplace need?
There is no reliable universal distance rule. Consider the number of separate risk areas, buildings, entrances, car parks and loading areas, together with the distance staff would need to travel for salt during icy conditions. Larger or divided sites will usually benefit from several treatment points rather than one central bin.
When should a business start gritting?
Gritting should be considered when frost, ice or snow is forecast, or when damp outdoor routes are likely to fall to freezing temperatures. Your site’s risk assessment should identify priority areas, who monitors conditions and who is responsible for treatment.
Should rock salt be spread before or after frost?
Preventative treatment before ice forms is generally more effective because salt needs time and moisture to begin working. Early evening or before employees arrive can be appropriate, depending on the forecast and how the site is used. Further treatment may be necessary after snowfall, heavy rain or repeated traffic.
How should rock salt be stored?
Keep it dry, contained and protected from rain and contamination. Close the grit-bin lid after use, check supplies periodically and break up any compacted material before it is needed. Positioning the bin on a stable, well-drained surface will also make access and maintenance easier.
Do you offer urgent delivery and pricing for multiple grit bins?
Yes. Rapid delivery may be available depending on stock, quantity and destination. Stack can also arrange volume pricing and coordinated supply for larger sites or organisations requiring bins at several locations. Contact us with the quantities and delivery postcodes for a tailored quotation.
